00008 Driving on Death Valley backroads.

Eastbound

California to Maryland

3,700 miles

January 2017

My Fellowship began in January and I decided that it would be a great opportunity to spend my winter break driving across the country again.

However, this was a winter trip and I underestimated how much driving conditions would worsen at this time of the year. I was greeted by a lot of snow while crossing the Sierra Nevada, then later in Arizona and New Mexico. I was later faced with treacherous freezing rain in Texas, Oklahoma, and most of the remainder of the journey. This wet trip was not ideal for camping or really enjoying the outdoors, but I decided to take my time (three weeks), and mainly fous on historical sites and good Southern food!
